This is our annual service event. Scouts pass out grocery bags to homes in the neighborhoods of our community, and then the following weekend we pick up those bags (filled with food) and donate it to local food banks.
At this Pack Meeting, stacks of grocery bags will be laid out on a table for scouts to pick up. Each stack will come with a map. The map indicates which houses those bags should be distributed to. The number of bags in the stack should roughly equate to the number of houses in the designated region on the map.
Some scouts like to pair up and take on a stack of bags together, while other scouts take one on alone. When you take bags, please record which map you have taken so the Scouting for Food Chair knows who will be covering which areas.
It is ok if you want to distribute bags but can't make the collection event. We will find another family to collect the bags that you distributed. (The opposite is also true: if you are unable or don't want to distribute bags, you can still participate on collection day).
Scouts will distribute the bags to the houses on their maps. Do this whenever is convenient for you on that day.
Please do not place bags in mailboxes. If you tape bags to a door, please use painters' tape (or something nondestructive). Be safe and be considerate of our neighbors and their property!
If you don't have enough bags to cover your entire map, reach out to the Scouting for Food Chair. Other Scouts may have leftover bags. The Chair will coordinate surplus bag transfers.
If you took a set of bags but something came up and you won't be able to distribute them, please contact the SFF Chair immediately so we can find another family to cover that area.
If you are in the Bingham Farms Elementary region, we will meet in the school's parking lot. When you arrive, find the SFF Chair, who will give you a map of an area. At 9am, we will set out from the school to our respective areas and collect all the food bags from houses in those areas. Take the food-filled bags from people's porches, driveways, etc, and put them in your vehicle. Once you've picked up all the bags in your area (please double check you haven't left any behind!), return to Bingham Farms Elementary, where we will transfer the food from your vehicle to one of the large vehicles (trucks, SUVs) that have volunteered to bring the food to a designated drop site. Our preferred drop site, YAD EZRA, closes at 11am, so we'd like to have all food back at Bingham Farms by 10:30am. This gives you an hour and a half window to get to your area, collect food bags, and return to the school. If you don't make it back to Bingham Farms Elementary by 10:30am, and our drop site vehicles have already left, you will need to bring the food to the alternate drop site, Troy Scout Shop, yourself. The Troy Scout Shop will be accepting food until 2:00pm.
If you are in the West Maple Elementary region, you don't need to meet at Bingham Farms at 8:45am; you can instead go directly to picking up bags, but please don't begin collecting until 9:00am (the labels on the bags say people have until 9am). If you distributed bags, please collect from the same area. If you did not distribute bags, please contact the SFF Chair who will coordinate which area to collect from (and provide you the corresponding map). When you have collected all the bags/food from your area, the choice is yours: if there is time, you can drive down to Bingham Farms Elementary and transfer the food to one of our drop site vehicles. Otherwise, you can drive directly to either drop site. If you bypass Bingham Farms, please call/text the SFF Chair and let them know which areas you've collected.
It's historically rather cold, so dress warmly. Scouts do not need to be in Class A uniform; their Pack T-shirt will do fine (under their winter coats). Wear proper shoes or boots for repeatedly getting in and out of the car and running up to doorsteps and back.
Historically, some families have brough cider donuts to share. In any case, we advise having a hardy breakfast beforehand.
If you have a truck or SUV, please volunteer to be a drop site vehicle!
One of the drop site drivers should pick up our SFF patches at the YAD EZRA drop site. There should be 30 patches waiting for you there.
